DARING DENIM

GET THE LOOK: Dress | Shein \\ Shoes | Wet Seal \\

Do you ever experiment when you go shopping and pick out something that is slightly unlike your style taste? Well, I did that with this piece. As I was doing a bit of online browsing on Shein, I came across this dress. I loved how it looked. But I knew it was a bit off from my usual style. I thought I'd take a chance on it anyway. It was on sale so it was the perfect piece to experiment with. Every once in awhile I like stepping out of my comfort zone when it comes to my style. It's a good challenge and lets me be creative in a different capacity. And this dress was definitely a challenge, a good one of course.

JUST A LITTLE LACE IN PARADISE

13 July 2016

GET THE LOOK: Top: H&M | Jeans: H&M | Sandals: Wet Seal

Who doesn't love a little lace? As I was doing my usual online shopping scroll and saw this beautiful top from H&M, it was love at first look. And the love only grew stronger when I got a look at the price. It was featured in H&M's 60% off summer sale (now it's 70%, go!) and was originally $50. Now it was only $20. Have you ever loved the price of something more than you loved the actual piece? Haha. It was certainly a great deal and one I couldn't pass up.

Although I'm always very skeptical when it comes to online shopping, I am super insistent with trying anything I buy on first, I jumped right into buying this blouse. I had already sent back a ton of other pieces that I bought online and didn't like at all, but I was set on giving this top a go. And I definitely wasn't disappointed. It's gorgeous.

A bit of a warning, though, it's very see through, but that clearly didn't stop me. It's definitely a blouse you can dress up for a nice night out or just a cute summer day like I styled mine. Did I mention it's off the shoulder? Yes. Another one. I'm genuinely obsessed. After looking at my summer wardrobe I realized that 90% of it was off the shoulder. There's just something regal and sophisticated when wearing OFS anything, and to pair it with lace only adds to the allure.

Pairing this sweet top with a bit of edge with the ripped jeans was a nice balance for me. And to top it (or bottom?) it off I wore one of my favorite summer purcahses, these black galdiaort sandals from Wet Seal. What do you think about this combination? Love lace or leave lace? Tell me what you think!

WHAT TO WEAR AND AVOID ACCORDING TO YOUR BODY TYPE

12 July 2016

Knowing what to avoid and what to wear according to your shape is a huge life saver. It'll save you time spent wondering around and trying on a ton of stuff that doesn't fit. Because the truth is many of us spend wasted time on buying pieces that don't fit and get frustrated with not having clothes that never quite look right. Luckily, in this second part of the series, we're going to go over what your specific body shape should be wearing and avoiding.

I hope you jotted down your body type details from last week because you'll need them today! Before you dive into the post, here's a disclaimer. I'm not saying you ONLY have to wear this certain item or you can NEVER wear that item. I'm just sharing pieces that look better on your body and pieces that don't. If you love an item you should avoid, then that's totally fine. You wear it and you own it! Now, off to the rest of the post we go.

GENERAL TIPS FOR WHAT LOOKS MORE FLATTERING

  • APPLES
Monochrome colors, v-necks, shorter dresses and skirts, a-line cuts, bootcut or flared jeans, and empire waist blouses or dresses.
  • PEARS
Take emphasis away from your hips and draw them to your upper body. Make sure you're drawing all the attention upwards by choosing slimming bottoms and fitted tops.
  • HOURGLASSES
Accentuate your bust and silhouette your figure. You want to wear pieces that show off your curves. Pay special attention to things that hug your waist and accentuate your bust and hips. Anything that wraps around your waist or clings to your body is a winner.
  • RECTANGLES
Make sure you create balance throughout your body and wear pieces that create curves. Because you're more straight up and down, you should gravitate towards pieces that give your curves and enhance your waist.
  • INVERTED TRIANGLES
You want to find pieces that show off your legs and balance your hips and bust. You also want to accentuate your waist to give you more of a curvier appearance.

For me, because I have a smaller waist in correlation to my hips, I know that I need to avoid dresses that are A-Line and make my hips larger. Dresses that cinch at the waist are my best friends. They show off my curves and give me a more balanced look instead of a blobby appearance.

WHAT I WORE: Top: New York + Co | Shorts: New York + Co | Sunglasses: H&M

I'm not saying that I always wear dresses that cinch at the waist either, it's just that if I want to maximize the shape of my body and appear in a more flattering way, I need to focus on that. And to not, I'm an hourglass and I should avoid turtlenecks and lace-up flats. I know they don't look the most flattering on me, but I love them! Turtle necks are my favorites, so there's no way I'm ever giving them up. And that goes for everyone. If you're in love with a piece that doesn't go with your specific body shape, then wear it! Rules and guidelines are made to be broken occasionally, especially if it makes you feel your best.

Let's chat: How do you feel now that you know what to wear and avoid? Are you more confident with creating outfits? Or do you still feel lost? Let me know below! Until next time stylistas.

FINDING YOUR BODY TYPE AND WHY IT'S CRUCIAL

04 July 2016

This is something that I think most women struggle with. Whenever I ask people what they're body type or shape is they have no clue what I'm talking about. And it baffles me a bit because I think that knowing your body shape is a HUGE game changer in the way you shop, wear outfits, feel confident, SO many things can depend on what shape your body is. According to the Chic Fashionista, a body consultant, body shape is
"...is that we use the term "shape" to describe the overall silhouette of your body. Meaning - the contours of your body figure based on your waistline. Basically, it's how your upper, mid and lower half are in proportion with each other."
It's sometimes difficult to find clothing that specifically works well with our shape. And some women don't even know what shape they are. Which can definitely be problematic when shopping and finding your style. Finding your body shape is so crucial! Clothes that don't properly fit you, don't do you any justice. I always think that we should wear our clothes, our clothes shouldn't be wearing us. So before we get into the most popular shapes, let's make sure you can accurately find yours with these first steps.

1st, you'll need to do some measurements. Most of us already know our bust measurement, yep, your boobs. And depending on where you shop, you might even know your hip measurements. If you don't even know what I'm talking about, that's fine! Basically, all you need to do is grab some measuring tape and put it around your bust (boob area), waist and hips. Jot those numbers down, because you're gonna need them. They're super important for finding your shape.

2nd, think about where you tend to carry your weight. I know, this might be tough and sound a bit harsh, but it's pretty crucial in determining which shape you are. Where you carry your weight is a key factor in what boy type you fall under. For me, my weight is carried in my hips and bust, with my waist being the smallest part. So just from that I automatically know that I'm more of an hourglass shape. Which brings me to the last point...

3rd, your body size, and shape don't define you. They're just tools to aid you in the ultimate goal of finding pieces that make you feel beautiful and comfortable. So although we need to know these things, don't get hung up on them or obsess over it. You're more than a number or a size. You're beautiful and amazing, so own it!

Now that we've covered some basics, let's get to the actual shapes/types. These are pretty general and are used by most. There might be some shapes on here that you don't identify with. In that instance, leave me a comment and I'll be happy to get your info and help you find your specific type.

YOU'RE AN APPLE IF...
You have slim thighs, thin hips, a wider middle, a full bust and flatter bottom.
CELEBRITY BODY DOUBLES: Drew Barrymore and Catherine Zeta-Jones

YOU'RE AN HOURGLASS IF...

CELEB BODY DOUBLES: Christina Hendricks and Salma Hayek

YOU'RE A RECTANGLE IF...
You have narrow hips, a small bust, and an undefined waist.
CELEBRITY BODY DOUBLES: Keira Knightly and Cameron Diaz

YOU'RE A PEAR IF...

CELEBRITY BODY DOUBLES: Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson

YOU'RE AN INVERTED TRIANGLE IF...
You have broad shoulders, narrow hips, a flatter bottom, undefined waist and a bigger bust. Overall, your body looks more athletic and sporty.
CELEBRITY BODY DOUBLES: Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Biel

Pick two shapes that resonate the most with you based on the graphics and explanations. Now, go to your nearest mirror. I want you to give yourself a nice look up and down. Really see where your clothes fall on you or where most of your weight is carried. Take note of how wide your shoulders are or how slim your legs might be to your waist. Really give yourself a thorough inspection. Now after doing that for at least 10mins, which shape, based on that inspection would you say you look the most like? Found one? Great! Picking the right pieces and putting together great outfits is going to get a lot easier!

You may be reading these and finding that you fit into more than more definition, that's totally alright! You can be any combinations of these, so don't freak out or get frustrated because you don't fit into just one. You can also be a petite or plus size version of these shapes. For example, Kim Kardashian is clearly an hourglass but she's only 5'3 making her a petite hourglass. There's a ton of different combinations you can do with these shapes. If you can't find yours, or are having trouble figuring it, please leave me a comment below and I'll personally help you find your exact shape.

But before we end this first part, just know that no matter your shape, whether it's popular or socially considered beautiful or not, you're beautiful no matter what. And going forward in this series. I'll keep on reminding you of that because it's true! And I don't want you to get hung up on a size or number.

By the end of this series, my mission is to help you embrace your unique shape and know how to dress it up in a way that both flatters you and gives you confidence. You with me? We'll talk next week about what you need to wear and avoid according to your shape because now that you know your shape, you gotta know how to strut it! So stay tuned stylistas.
